‘There is no problem here with the spirit of the game’: Brian Lara weighs in on Jonny Bairstow’s stumping

Legendary West Indies batter Brian Lara has weighed in on the conversation that has dominated discussion over the past week – Jonny Bairstow’s stumping.
The former West Indies captain said there is nothing wrong with the way Alex Carey dismissed Jonny Bairstow and shared a clip of him getting out in the similar fashion England wicketkeeper Alec Stewart during a ODI match in 1997.
“There is no problem here with the spirit of the game!” Lara wrote on Instagram.

“Well done Alec Stewart ! (1997) Well done Alex Carey ! (2023).Both your intentions were to execute a stumping/run out the minute the ball was in your gloves.”
Lara also said it is batters make and the keepers shouldn’t be blamed as completely under the rules.
“If the batter was paying attention he would’ve stayed in his crease,” he said.
Lara gave the example of the famous “hand of god” goal Diego Maradona during the 1986 Football World Cup and reminded the fans that it is not the first time such incidents has happened in sports.

“We have seen “The hand of god” from the #goat and so many other incidents in all sports let’s move on to the next Test,” he said.
Australia are leading the Ashes series 2-0 with the third Test at Leeds being evenly poised.
