England looking to hire Kieron Pollard to help them retain T20 World Cup next year | Cricket News
England are reportedly set to appoint former West Indian cricketer Kieron Pollard as a consultant coach for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA in June.
The defending champions are looking to retain the title they won in 2022. Pollard will replicate the role former Australian batter Mike Hussey played with the team in 2022.
“Pollard also brings an intimate knowledge of conditions in the West Indies. The Trinidadian will help England to assess the pitches in the T20 World Cup, which begins on June 4. He will play a similar role to Mike Hussey, the former Australian batsman, in the 2022 T20 World Cup victory,” a report in The Telegraph said.
The report further added that Pollard was seen in a hotel in Trinidad where the England team stayed for the final two T20Is against West Indies as part of their five-match series.
England lost a close-fought series 3-2, which comes on the heels of their poor 50-over World Cup campaign earlier this year in India.
Pollard has a reputation as one of the most lethal batters in the T20 format. He burnished his reputation during his time with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. Pollard has played 189 IPL games for the Mumbai franchise and scored 2316 runs at a strike rate of 147.32. The allrounder also has 69 wickets. The big hitter is among the top five six hitters in IPL with 223 sixes.
Though retired from the IPL, he is currently associated with the Mumbai Indians as a batting coach. The power-hitter is also active as a player in some of the franchise leagues around the globe.
England white-ball skipper Jos Buttler was also part of Mumbai Indians in the 2016-17 seasons and played with Pollard in Somerset in the 2010-11 seasons.
The England white-ball skipper has, in the past, acknowledged the role of West Indian players in modifying his T20 game. “I heard a few guys talk about it like, ‘There’s eight overs left; if we hit five sixes in that time, we’ll win the game’,” Buttler has said. “It’s just a different way of thinking.”
