Battle of Rezang La
Major Shaitan Singh of the 13 Kumaon Regiment commanded a company of 120 soldiers at Rezang La in Ladakh, a battle that remains one of the most remarkable stands in Indian military hory. On November 18, 1962, his men faced between 3,000 and 5,000 Chinese troops without artillery support. Despite being vastly outnumbered, Major Singh moved from post to post under intense enemy fire, rallying his soldiers and organizing the defence.
Gravely injured during the fighting, Major Singh ordered his men to leave him behind when they attempted to evacuate him under heavy fire. He was placed behind a boulder, where he succumbed to his injuries. His body was later recovered and cremated with full military honours. For his leadership and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration.
The battle remains among the few bright spots in the 1962 war against China and saved Ladakh from being occupied the Chinese.
Rezang La, perched 16,000 feet above sea level near the strategic village of Chushul, remains a symbol of indomitable valour. Of the 120 Indian soldiers who fought that day, 114 were martyred, but their resance is believed to have prevented Ladakh from falling into Chinese hands.Story continues below this ad

Controversy Over the Film’s Title
In recent weeks, 120 Bahadur has faced protests from the Ahir community in Gurgaon, who have demanded a change in the film’s title. The demonstrators argue that the story should more explicitly acknowledge the role of Ahir soldiers in the Rezang La battle. Bal Kishan Yadav, BJP leader and councillor from Manesar’s Bhangrulla ward, emphasized that the protest was not politically motivated.
“Our community is here today to ensure our valiant efforts are reflected in hory instead of being wiped out as is being attempted. The character (Farhan) Akhtar plays (Major Shaitan Singh) did lead the 100+ Ahirs, but our sacrifice should not be forgotten promoting only the Chauhan community,” he said.
The protesters marched roughly 17 kilometres, from Kherki Daula Toll Plaza to the Delhi-Haryana border at Sirhaul, in a show of solidarity. However, the newly released trailer suggests that the filmmakers have made amends. In one scene, a soldier proudly declares, “We are Ahirs. If we are asked with love, we’d give our lives. When it comes to our country, we can take 100 lives.”Story continues below this ad
