3 dead, 14 missing after two tour boats, carrying 70 people, capsize in China’s Wu river | World News

At least three people were dead and 14 remained missing after two tour boats capsized in China’s southwestern Guizhou province in Wu river on Sunday, state media reported.
Around 70 people fell into the water when the two tour boats overturned in the Wu river in Qianxi city, Guizhou province and about 50 people were pulled out of the river emergency responders till Sunday evening, official Xinhua news agency said.
Officials said rescuers were looking for 14 people who were still missing and might have drowned in the river as the boats capsized, reports stated.

State media reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday called for an “all out effort” in the search and rescue operation and to provide proper treatment for those injured in the incident.

The incident took place on Sunday afternoon after sudden rain, strong winds and hail storm hit the Wu river, which is a tributary of the Yangtze. In a video released state media, a person can be seen performing CPR, while a vessel was seen drifting upside down, Associated Press reported.
The boat capsizing occurred in Guizhou province whose mountains and rivers are a major tour attraction in the region.
President Xi Jinping’s adminration has worked to reduce the incidents and death toll in the transportation sector, however, overloading, poorly maintained vehicles and a lack of safety equipment have failed the attempts made the government.
The incident occurred during the five-day May Day holiday, which is scheduled to end on Monday.Story continues below this ad
State-backed Beijing News reported that an eye witness claimed the waters were deep but a few people onboard the boats managed to swim to safety.
