Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena’s uncle Kunal Kapoor calls vegetarians ‘rac’: ‘I treat them to veg and non-veg food on my table, they deny me…’ | Bollywood News

Kunal Kapoor, actor, filmmaker, and theatre enthusiast, admits he looks at vegetarians with disdain. Coming from the legendary Kapoor family, late actor Shashi Kapoor’s son feels while he offers veg food to vegetarians who visit his home, he’s denied non-veg food when he visits a vegetarian’s place.
“I think vegetarians are rac,” said Kunal in a conversation with actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt on her podcast. Pooja is the elder ser of Alia Bhatt, who is married to Ranbir Kapoor, Kunal’s nephew. “So, I’m a rac?” Pooja laughed and asked Kunal, after sensing “disdain” at her mention of the vegetarian French delicacy.
“Ya, you are because you deny me being a non-vegetarian. On my table, you’ll have vegetarian food and non-vegetarian food. But when I go to a vegetarian house, he won’t give me non-vegetarian food. But in my house, I’ll treat him. I’ll give him veg and non-veg food,” reasoned Kunal, as Pooja continued laughing.
Kunal, son of actors Shashi Kapoor and Jennifer Kendal, made his acting debut with Conrad Rooks’ 1972 Indo-American film Siddhartha, playing Shashi’s reel-life son. He also starred in Shyam Benegal’s Junoon (1979) alongside his parents, and Esmayeel Shroff’s 1981 romance Aha Aha, also starring his uncle Shammi Kapoor. He once again played Shashi’s son in Govind Nihalani’s 1982 coming-of-age drama Vijeta, and acted alongside his father again in Girish Karnad’s 1984 erotic romance Utsav.
After acting in Benegal’s Trikal (1985), Kunal quit his Bollywood to set up his ad film production company Adfilm-Valas. He returned to acting 10 years ago with Prabhu Deva’s 2015 action comedy Singh Is Bliing, and was most recently seen in Ashutosh Gowariker’s 2019 period war drama Panipat. His son Zahan Kapoor is also an actor, best known for playing the lead in Vikramaditya Motwane’s Netflix India prison drama show Black Warrant earlier this year.

The Kapoor family are known to be great aficionados for food, particularly for paaya (a soup made from animal trotters). Their love for food has been documented in Smriti Mundhra’s recent Netflix India documentary Dining with the Kapoors, produced Kunal’s nephew Armaan Jain. In an exclusive interview with SCREEN, Armaan also spilled some eating traits of the Kapoor family, particularly his cousins Karisma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor.

“Karisma eats a lot more than Kareena. I don’t know how. She is so lucky because of her metabolism. Kareena is also a big foodie. But this generation is so diligent and a little up to speed with working out. All of us work out maybe twice or thrice a day so that we can enjoy that meal. So, we all love our food. It’s just that we are putting in that little extra effort to keep ourselves maintained. All of us are foodies, but Karisma can eat a lot,” said Armaan.
