8 box office records destroyed by Akshay Kumar’s Gold, John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate
The year 2018 has seen many big box office surges till now — Padmaavat, Sanju and Baaghi 3 being just a few — but Akshay Kumar’s Gold and John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate have been great news in a good year. The two films, released on Independence Day and heading towards a festive weekend that includes Parsi New Year, have already broken eight box office records between both of them. While Gold and Satyameva Jayate are likely to see a drop on day two at box office as it was a working day, the numbers are just going to surge in the coming weekend.
While Akshay’s Gold got 3,050 screens In India, John’s action drama is showing on 2,500 screens. Despite a superlative track record of Ashay, Gold holds a special place in his filmography. John, fresh off the success of Parmanu, has also found himself a prospective Rs 100-crore churner in Satyameva Jayate, according to a confident trade. Gold is Akshay Kumar’s highest opener ever
Before Gold, Akshay’s highest collection was that of Singh Is Bliing (Rs 16.98 crore). However, Rs 25.25 crore of Gold cements Akshay’s position as a rival of Khans who hold top records in terms of openers.
Independence Day 2018 was highest opening day ever
Gold and Satyameva Jayate together have beaten the highest opening day record in the Hindi film circuit, so far held by the Rs 40 crore net collections of one film, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Together, Akshay and John’s films earned about Rs 45 crore.
Satyameva Jayate is John Abraham’s biggest opener ever
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted on Thursday, “The big Independence Day holiday results in big numbers at the box office. Both Gold and Satyameva Jayate have a terrific day one and both, Akshay and John record their highest day one business. Yes, the box office is on fire.” With over Rs 20 crore at box office, the vigilante drama is way ahead of John Abraham’s best solo performer so far, which was action drama Force 2 that had made Rs 5.75 crore.
Gold ranks for highest occupancy on day 1
With significant first day occupancy of 52.5%, Gold has emerged as the third highest opener of 2018 so far after Baaghi 2 and Sanju. Satyameva Jayate, meanwhile, ranks sixth in the list with 42.5%. According to Box Office India, while most circuits reported equally healthy numbers for both films, Gold took the lead in circuits like Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, East Punjab and Mumbai thanks to Kumar’s massy fan following.
The top openers of 2018
Gold box office collection is supposed to surge in coming days with the film predicted to be a Rs 100 crore earner.
The two films also made it to the top five openers of 2018. Sanju collected Rs 34.75 crore followed by Salman Khan’s Race 3, which collected Rs 29.17 crore. Gold is on the third place with a collection of Rs 25.25 crore ,followed by Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2 and then comes Satyameva Jayate at the fifth position with Rs 20.52 crore.
Satyameva Jayate is highest opener for A-rated film
Satyameva Jayate, directed by Milap Zaveri, is also the highest opener for an A-rated film. The John Abraham starrer has not received great reviews from critics. Gold, directed by Reema Kagti, on the other hand, is has received some great reviews, especially for Akshay’s performance.

Satyameva Jayate is director Milap Milan Zhaveri’s biggest opener till date too. He has earlier directed Sunny Leone’s Mastizaade and Jaane Kahaan Se Aayi Hai. Gold director Reema Kagti gets a personal record too. She made Talaash and Honeymoon Travels previously.
Akshay Kumar’s Gold and John Abraham’s Satyameva Jayate are based on the same theme – patriotism – but belong to completely different set up. While Akshay’s film was about India’s first gold medal in hockey at 1948 Olympics, John Abraham’s film is about a vigilante who kills corrupt cops.
