Viswanathan Anand to commentate on first four games of FIDE World Chess Championship

Five-time World Champion Viswanathan Anand will don the role of a commentator for the first four games of the FIDE World Chess Championship, which be start next month.
The World Championship Match 2023 will take place in Kazakhstan’s Astana from April 7 to May 1, with Grandmaster Ding Liren taking on Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi across 14 matches.
Joining Anand in the commentary box will be eight-time US Women’s Champion Irina Krush. From Game Five onwards, taking Anand’s spot will be Daniil Dubov, who was part of Magnus Carlsen’s team for the Dubai 2021 World Championship.
This year’s World Championship will be held at Astana’s St Regis hotel, where it’s glass-domed Winter Garden, a structure that pays homage to the traditional Kazakh yurt, will be the venue for the contests.
The title match in Astana will be played as the best of 14 games, with a time control of 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed 60 minutes for the next 20 moves, and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move 61. In case of a tie, the Champion would be determined in a rapid chess playoff.
Reigning world champion Carlsen gave up his right to take part in the match and defend his title, meaning GM Liren was sent an invite to face GM Nepomniachtchi for the chance to be the next world champion.
