I can’t remember losing a game for United: Harry Maguire defends himself, says his influence is still there at Old Trafford
Manchester United defender and former captain Harry Maguire may not be a regular feature at the club but his influence is still there in Erik Ten Hag’s side.
“In my last nine starts for United, we have won,” Maguire said after England’s recent 2-1 win against Italy in Euro 2024 qualifier. “I can’t remember losing a game for United. So my influence is still there. I do also understand that when you are the captain of United you do come under the most amount of scrutiny. Last season at club level, my performances weren’t good enough, alongside everybody else at club level.”
Since the arrival of Erik Ten Hag to United last year, Maguire has been replaced Lisandro Martinez as Raphael Varane’s first choice centre-back for United.
A pair that also led the club to their first title since 2016 as United beat Newcastle to lift the Carabao Cup.
“I’m with a mindset of: ‘If we don’t win the tournament, it’s been a failure,’” Maguire said. “We’ve got to qualify first and it’s a tough group. But that’s my mindset. I’ve been at three major tournaments and I’ve come so close. I believe that we have the players to win it.”
Even though he hasn’t featured for club, Maguire has been a regular starter for Gareth Southgate’s England XI. The centre-back also lend his views on the national team’s run under Southgate that includes a semifinal and a quarterfinal spot and another Euros final appearance.
“We played really well in the World Cup and we got knocked out to a good French team. A French team that we believe we can take on and, if we play them 10 times, we would give them a good game 10 times and probably win more than we lose. However, they’ve proven over the years that they manage to get the job done better than England do,” Maguire said.
He was further asked whether he felt ‘appreciated’ while playing for the national side. “For England, yes, I do,” he said. “Last season was difficult for the club but I’ve proven myself to Gareth. I’ve made over 50 caps. I’m England’s top-scoring defender. I’ve played nearly 200 times for United. I’ve captained the club for three years.”
