IPL 2023: Simulator picks RR, LSG, CSK and MI to make play-offs

Rajasthan Royals, Lucknow Supergiants, Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the four teams tipped to make the play-offs of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) according to a statical simulation model conducted D & P Advisory. Interestingly, the simulator has picked Delhi Capitals – who are without Rishabh Pant — and Royal Challengers Bangalore as the teams with least chances of making the play-offs.

The new season of the IPL begins in Ahmedabad on Friday with defending champions Gujarat Titans taking on four-time winners Chennai Super Kings. Last season, two new teams – Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Supergiants – performed exceedingly well to make the final with the two powerhouses Chennai and Mumbai Indians finishing in the bottom.
D & P Advisory who regularly come up with IPL brand valuation have now come up with a prediction using the Monte Carlo simulation to predict the four teams that make the play-offs. “To predict the ‘Top Four’ of the league phase of the upcoming 2023 season of the Indian Premier League, we have relied on Monte Carlo simulation, a statical technique that is generally used in the field of finance, but can be equally well applied in the business of sports. We value complex derivatives for which we simulate millions of future outcomes to estimate the fair value of the derivative. We have valued many such derivatives over the last several years and we thought of using that experience and skill on something that we all love – the IPL,” Santosh N, managing partner at D & P Advisory said.
Into its 16th season, the IPL is one of the most watched sporting event across the globe thanks to the drama that it brings on the field as out of the 950 matches played so far, there have been 564 last-over finishes with 350 matches won the side defending the total. There have also been 100 matches were the margin of defeat was 10 or less runs and there have been 35-last ball finishes.
With these things, it may be even more challenging to predict an outcome, and the D & P have relied on various data to use it in the simulator. According to the report, the factors considered include each team’s batting and bowling strength based on its squad, home ground advantage, net run rate, past overall record, current momentum and other relevant metrics that we believe could contribute to the overall explanatory power of the model.

The report says that to determine the effectiveness, dribution, and variability of these attributes, the team analysed the horical IPL data and used random sampling to generate thousands of possible future scenarios. The past data were scrutinized to weed out any possible outliers that could introduce bias in the simulation model.
