While You Were Asleep: Man City rout Madrid 4-0 to advance to CL final, Iga Swiatek retires from Italian Open, Kyrgios set to miss French Open

Manchester City defeated league leaders Real Madrid 4-0 on Wednesday to go to the Champions League final for the second time in three seasons (5-1 on aggregate).
Bernardo Silva’s two goals in the first half gave City the upper hand. Later, an own goal Eder Militao and a late fourth goal from Julian Alvarez gave Pep Guardiola’s team the victory as they exacted revenge for last year’s heartbreaking semi final defeat.
“We are there. We can think about it, can visualize it,” the City manager said after his side’s victory.
With Inter Milan waiting in the final, City will now be strong favourites to win the trophy Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Mansour has been yearning for since buying the club in 2008, having lost to Chelsea two years ago.

Since Portuguese midfielder Silva beat Thibaut Courtois with a shot in the 23rd minute and then headed in his team’s second in the 37th, City has gone undefeated in 26 home games in the competition.
Swiatek retires from Italian Open
Two-time reigning champion, Iga Swiatek, withdrew due to a right thigh injury in the third set of her quarterfinal match against Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina at the Italian Open.
It was 2-2 in the third when the top-ranked Swiatek stopped after more than two hours of play. She won the first set 6-2 before Rybakina took the second set 7-6 (3).

Swiatek’s retirement in Rome put a stop to her 14-match winning streak and cast doubt on her ability to compete at the French Open, where the main draw gets underway on May 28 and the Polish woman is the defending champion.
Swiatek grabbed her right knee during the second set tiebreaker after changing directions several times beyond the baseline. After the set, she took a medical timeout and departed the court, nearly in tears. Her upper right thigh was bandaged when she came back. Then, after playing in four more games, she gave up.
Kyrgios set to miss French Open
Nick Kyrgios was forced to miss the French Open due to a foot injury sustained during the theft of his car and not because of a knee problem, his agent said on Thursday.
A Canberra suspect allegedly held up the Wimbledon final’s mother at gunpoint close to his home earlier this month and took his Tesla, according to police.
Kyrgios’s agent, Daniel Horsfall, said the player had injured himself during the “high-adrenaline rush of everything” that had happened during the robbery.
“During the incident on May 1, they had the armed robbery at the house. With all the stuff that was going on Nick lacerated the side of his left foot. We don’t know how,” Horsfall told Reuters.
“Basically, it’s just set him back about two-and-a-half weeks in terms of his loading schedule to get back on court for what we thought was going to be the Grand Slam.”

While Kyrgios has not officially addressed the incident, he did mention that he had not slept well and was “fighting a little” in a post on social media.
