Virender Sehwag: ‘Foreign coaches have biases too’, cites Greg Chappell

Former Indian batsman Virender Sehwag believes that foreign coaches can show the same biases that is often accused of Indian coaches and cited the example of when Greg Chappell promised him the captaincy spot but removed him from the national team two months later.
Sehwag said that during his time in the national team, he would ask his seniors why there couldn’t be an Indian coach after John Wright, and the answer he got was that bias was a big factor.
“Those seniors had spent a lot of time with Indian coaches and felt that they had favorites and would show bias towards those players. ‘Jo favourite nahi hota hai uski shamat aa jati hai’ (A player who is not a favourite, lands in a lot of trouble).
“They believed that if a foreign coach came, he would judge all the players according to how they needed to be judged. But actually, this isn’t true because foreign coaches have their favourites as well. They too see the names… be it Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly or Laxman. When Greg Chappell came the first statement he made was ‘Sehwag will be captain’. In two months… forget captaincy, I was out of the team,” said Sehwag in a SportsNext interview.
Sehwag then said that the Indian team was not in a position where they need coaching, but rather a unit that needs better man management. He added that coaches who had a good relationship with players and knew the individual requirements of players, were a lot more successful. He then cited the example of Gary Kirsten.

“The best was Gary Kirsten, who would make me play 50 balls and then tell me to go back home or to the hotel. Rahul Dravid would play 200 balls, Tendulkar 300 and Gambhir 400 – he knew how much each player needed to practice,” said Sehwag.
