‘I saw the worst cricket match ever played a West Indies team’: Trinidad and Tobago PM Keith Rowley after WI loss to NED
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Miner Keith Rowley slammed the West Indies cricket team after their defeat to the Netherlands in the ongoing World Cup qualifiers on Monday.
Terming it as the ‘worst match ever’ for the Caribbean side, Rowley expressed dismay on the performance and took to social media to express his views.
“Today I saw THE WORST CRICKET MATCH ever played a West Indies team,” Rowley wrote on his Facebook page.
“This amateurish demoralizing embarrassment has to stop. Playing for West Indies requires a desire to fight, to believe, to win. To saunter through to defeat is unacceptable,” he added.
“Playing for West Indies must be a treasured privilege available only to the best that are prepared to show character in defence of our legacy and our pride. Those to whom these truths mean nothing must not be allowed out in West Indies colours,” he further wrote.
The loss to the Netherlands meant the two-time winners West Indies have appeared at every tournament since it was first staged in 1975, but with only the top two teams from the Super Sixes qualifying for the main event, their chances now appear slim.
“The stench of today’s embarrassment didn’t start today it had a long gestation period in two decades of disappointment so those who were ‘expecting’ should not come looking for any exemption here,” he wrote.
In a thrilling encounter batting first, West Indies posted 374 for six in their 50 overs, but a superb 111 from 76 balls Netherlands batsman Teja Nidamanuru allowed the Dutch to tie the game and set up a super over.
Netherlands player Logan van Beek starred with the bat as well as the ball in the Super Over. He would then take matters into his own hands as smashed 30 from Jason Holder’s over and West Indies wilted under the pressure as they lost both their wickets for eight runs in five balls. van Beek was the hero once again as he sent back Johnson Charles and Holder as West Indies could get only 8.
