Michael Vaughan slams Harry Brook and calls his shot selection as ‘shocking’
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan said Harry Brook shot selection that led to his dismissal was “shocking”. Harry Brook continued to flap at the bouncers and somehow managed a chancy half-century, only to fall soon after in an ugly fashion. He moved leg-side to a short ball directed at his body, trying a tennis-style forehand only to spoon an easy catch to Pat Cummins at extra cover off Mitchell Starc’s bowling.
“Shocking shot,” Michael Vaughan said on BBC Test match special.
“England clearly like losing. Yesterday they gifted Australia three wickets. They arrive on day 3, the pitch is doing a bit more. To see the wicket and Australia now know they are bowling to the tail.”
England lost their last six wickets for just 47 runs on the morning of day 3. “England need to be realic. They cannot mix entertainment with stupidity,” Vaughan said.
“For the first 188 runs, England played good cricket with proper shots,” he added.
Vaughan slammed the England batting approach as stupid. “Australian bowlers got no help as the ball was not doing anything, so they resorted to short balls. What came next was pure stupidity,” he said.
Courtesy of England’s batting collapse Australia have ended up day 3 on a strong note and are favourites to win the Test match. The visitors were on 130-2 with Usman Khawaja on 58 and Steve Smith on six when then rain began to fall.
Australia leading England 221 with eight wickets remaining. Opener David Warner was trapped lbw for 25 a ball nipping in from Josh Tongue in the 25th over as the visitors began to build steadily on their first-innings lead of 91.
Marnus Labuschagne then departed for 30, thick-edging a ball from Jimmy Anderson straight to Harry Brook at point to make way for Smith.
