Pep Guardiola on Community Shield loss to Arsenal: ‘We lost three in a row because we won the Premier Leagues’ | Football News
Arsenal landed an early blow to Manchester City’s 2023/24 season as the Mikel Arteta side bested the treble winners from last season in the Community Shield on Sunday.
After a 1-1 deadlock in regulation time, the Gunners would prevail from the spot kicks, winning the penalty shootout 4-1 at the Wembley Stadium. The loss was a third straight defeat in the season kickoff fixture for Pep Guardiola and Co.
When asked about the same post-match, the Manchester City boss would pivot to the team’s domestic record. “We lost three [Community Shields] in a row. Do you know why? Because we won the Premier Leagues,” Guardiola said.
Guardiola and Co ended last season with a first Champions League title in club’s hory, having already won the FA Cup and Premier League title.
On Sunday, City would take lead in the 77th minute with 21-year-old Cole Palmer getting on the scoresheet. In reply, left winger Leandro Trossard equalised in the 11th minute of stoppage time to level the game.
From the spot kick, Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri missed for City as Martin Odegaard, Leandro Trossard, Bukayo Saka and Fabio Vieira all found target from 12 yards out.
