Hangzhou Asian Para Games, Day 5: Sheetal wins sensational individual title; 4 golds in Para badminton as India finish day on 99 medals | Asian-games News

The fourth edition of Asian Para Games officially got underway with medal events on 23 October. India had won 14 medals at the 2010 edition, 33 in 2014 and 72 in 2018. In Guangzhou at the inaugural edition, India had won 1 gold while that number went up to 15 in Indonesia. In Jakarta, India finished 9th overall in the medals tally.
Horically, much like the Asian Games, track and field have contributed most to the India medal tally at the Asian Para Games. Before the 2023 edition, India had won a total of 119 medals and 60 of those came from athletics.

On Friday, India got to within one medal of the 100-mark at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games. Already India’s most successful campaign, a century is once again on the cards in China after India finished with 107 medals at the Asian Games. India finished the day on 6th place in the medal tally with 25 gold, 29 silver, 45 bronze for a total of 99 medals.
The headliner of the day was Sheetal Devi who won her second gold medal of the Games when she became the individual champion too to go with her mixed doubles gold in compound open. Sheetal trailed three points after nine arrows in the final but shot two sets of Perfect 30s to mount a sensational comeback. She became the first Indian woman to win individual archery gold at the Asian Para Games.
Para badminton saw India clinch four gold and four silver from the eight finals they were involved in as the shuttlers returned with a total of 21 medals in their best showing at the Games. Pramod Bhagat, Suhas Yathiraj, Thulasimathi Murugesan, and Nitesh Kumar & Tarun won the gold medals.
Raman Sharma won gold in athletics with an Asian Record timing in the Men’s 1500m-T38 final. Solairaj Dharmaraj also won gold in Men’s Long Jump-T64 similarly with an Asian Record.
With one more day left to go at the Games, India look set to cross the 100-medal mark.
