Less than a day after the Australian cricket team lost Glenn Maxwell for Saturday’s World Cup clash with England, the team also got a second jolt: all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was flying home on Wednesday for personal reasons. The news from the Australian camp is that he will be out of the World Cup indefinitely.
Earlier, Maxwell suffered a concussion falling off the back of a golf cart in what was a freak accident. This led to him being ruled out of Saturday’s clash with England.

The absence of Maxwell and Marsh could mean that Marcus Stoinis gets a look in to face England at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Cameron Green is a possible inclusion as well.
Cricket.com.au noted that the absence of the two all rounders meant that Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are likely to return to “more familiar positions at three and four”. The report also pointed out that Travis Hea, who himself has just returned to the side after a long injury layoff, would have to take on a greater role with the ball to make up Maxwell’s spin overs.
Australia, who have won the title a record five times, started their 2023 campaign with two back-to-back defeats: to India six wickets and to South Africa 134 runs. But they turned their campaign around soon with wins over Sri Lanka, Pakan, the Netherlands and New Zealand. As of Thursday, they are third in the standings with only four teams making it to the semis.
