It’s not everyday you get to see a Cricket World Cup semifinal. For David Beckham, it was a first experience of watching the tournament, and he chose some time for it.
The former England football captain was in attendance among those at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai for the India-New Zealand semifinal and saw Virat Kohli pip past Sachin Tendulkar in the tally for most ODI hundreds – 50.
Speaking to Star Sports after, Beckham said, “Well, I’d like to say I had something to do with it (the record), but I didn’t. It’s a great pleasure to be here at this stadium and see a moment of hory. I spoke to Sachin earlier and I know what he’s achieved at this stadium and in this sport and to see Virat do that was special. It’s my first time in India and it couldn’t have been better.”
The former Manchester United midfielder added, “It’s first game at the World Cup and what a time to be here. I’ve been to some of the best stadiums in the world. And coming in here today, from the start, you knew it was something special.”

Beckham, who’s on a visit to India as UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador, was also seen passing the football alongside Kohli as the Indian team went about their warm up routine ahead of the semifinal.
Shortly afterwards, he’d take to his Instagram to post a story alongside the India number three with the caption, “Excited to see this guy.”
A couple hours later, it all felt worth it as another story from Beckham’s official handle read, “Kohli, record breaking 100.”
