Rahul Dravid says, ‘Haven’t yet signed a contract… had discussions on tenure with BCCI’ | Cricket News
Rahul Dravid has revealed that he is yet to sign a contract extension which will allow him to continue as the coach of the Indian cricket team.
Dravid had helped the Indian team to the final at the recently-concluded ODI World Cup, where India had suffered a heartbreaking defeat to Australia in the decider. The had been imperious in the group stage, shrugging off an illness to Shubman Gill and a tournament-ending injury to Hardik Pandya to march into the final with 10 victories in 10 matches, including the semis.
After India’s defeat went down to Australia in the 50-over World Cup final, Dravid had said at a press conference that he hadn’t thought about his future as India coach, as his tenure had come to an end.
“I haven’t yet signed a contract with the BCCI but had discussions on tenure. Once I get the papers, I will sign,” Dravid told journals after World Cup and contract review meeting on Thursday.
As The Indian Express had reported recently, Dravid has been offered an extension till the end of the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the United States in June.
Initially, the BCCI was reportedly keen on getting former India left-arm pacer Ashish Nehra as the coach for the shortest format. But when Nehra declined the job offer, the BCCI decided they wanted to repose their faith again in Dravid in all three formats.
As reported The Indian Express, India captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar were in favour of Dravid continuing as head coach till the T20 World Cup. Nehra has made his mark in the T20 format after taking over as coach at the IPL franchise Gujarat Titans, who won the title in their inaugural season in 2022 and then lost a thrilling final to Chennai Super Kings in 2023.
