India vs Australia One-off Test: Watch Beth Mooney dismissed in bizarre fashion Richa Ghosh | Cricket News

It’s Chrmas season, after all, and Australia gave India a gift during the One-Off Test at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday when opener Beth Mooney was run out in a bizarre manner.
The experienced left-hander, who has been a thorn in India’s flesh many times in the past, was looking in good touch early on in Australia’s second innings. And then came a moment she’d like to forget in the 12th over. Sneh Rana bowled a full ball that Mooney patted to Richa Ghosh at silly point. The Test debutant, who keeps wickets in the shorter formats, bent down low and picked up the ball in one quick motion. Ghosh then released the ball quickly to effect a direct hit. Meanwhile, Mooney had walked out of the crease and didn’t really make a conscious effort to get back as she turned her back to the fielder and lost track of where the ball was.
When she realised what was happening, it was already too late as Indians celebrated their first wicket of the day. It was a display of sharp awareness Ghosh, but the lack thereof Mooney, who could have a sleepless night or two over the dismissal.

On Day 2, India extended their dominance to lead 157 runs at stumps. Australia, however, had a good morning session to wrap up the Indian innings quickly at 406 to limit India’s lead to 187. The batting effort was also off to a good start and it was perhaps heading to be Australia’s session through and through, when the dismissal happened.
Mooney’s dismissal marked a mini-trend in this Test match of the opening batters getting run out in bizarre manners. In the first innings, it was Mooney at the other end as she called Phoebe Litchfield for a quick single in the first over. There was a mix up and the young opener was caught well short for that rare and frustrating 0-ball 0, referred to as a Diamond Duck.

In India’s first innings, Smriti Mandhana was looking well-set, rarely troubled on a tricky pitch, cruising towards another Test century against Australia. But, on 74, she stepped out of the crease and squeezed the ball out to backward point and hesitated in taking off for the single. Richa Ghosh had started off at the other end, and Mandhana started rushing but even so, seemed to slow down towards the end as she stretched the bat out. Ash Gardner too stretched, with the ball in hand from Kim Garth’s throw and took the bails off to catch Mandhana short the smallest of margins.
