Jasprit Bumrah arguably bowled one of the best spells of fast bowling on the sub-continent soil in the 2nd Test between India and England at Visakhapatnam. However, the standing moment in the Test match came on Day 2 when the bowler delivered a destructive yorker to England’s number three Ollie Pope.
Both middle and leg-stump were uprooted with just the off-stump standing its ground and the batter shell shocked not knowing what hit him “I remember saying ages back that a good yorker bowled in India or South Africa or Australia remains a good yorker because you take the surface out of it, doesn’t matter where you bowled it,” said Sunrisers Eastern Cape bowling coach Dale Steyn.
The premium fast bowler won Player Of The Match for his nine-wicket haul. He also revealed about his lethal yorker and said “The yorker was the first delivery I learnt. While playing with the tennis ball, I learned it. I saw on the television Waqar, Wasim and Zaheer execute it and learned it,” Bumrah said at the post-match presentation.
Bumrah’s sheer pace and ability to reverse swing generated wicket-tacking deliveries on a pitch conducive to batting. Steyn praised the bowler’s ability to take the pitch out of the equation. “You take the pitch away and I think that’s one thing that he’s done well,” he would say on the eve of the SA20 final interacting with Indian media.
“To take wickets in Test matches, there are probably a handful of guys who could do that. Trent Boult was one of those, Mitchell Starc maybe. And, Bumrah,” Steyn said on Friday.
Bumrah also tends to be not only quick through the air but also troubles the batters because of his release point as he tends to hurry the batters. “All around he’s a fantastic bowler. And it’s no surprise with his skiddy kind of action that he’s got that. He takes wickets on those docile pitches, so he’s fantastic,” Steyn added.
