Tributes pour in as David Warner’s international career comes to an end after Afghanan’s win over Bangladesh in T20 World Cup | Cricket News
With Afghanan’s victory against Bangladesh on Tuesday, Australia were knocked out of the T20 World Cup and with that opener David Warner’s international career also came to an end. His last match will now be Australia’s 24-run defeat to India in the Super 8 match on Monday, a bittersweet end to a career spanning 15 years.
“(I) put my arm around him. I said, ‘…just take a moment tonight to sit back yourself and reflect on what’s been an unbelievable career across all three formats for Australia. We know he retired in the summer from test cricket, but you’ll struggle to find a guy that’s had as big an impact on all three forms in Australian cricket than David Warner has. I’ve been able to play with him, I’ve been able to coach him in the IPL the last couple of years and I really enjoy his company. So he should be very proud of what he’s done,” Ricky Ponting said on what he said to Warner after his last match.
The 37-year-old Warner, who made his international debut in January 2009 in a T20I match, played his final ODI match in the World Cup final win over India in November 2023 and his last Test against Pakan in January. He has long signalled that this T20 World Cup would be his final tournament.

He retires as Australia’s highest scorer and seventh-most prolific batter in the world in T20 format with 3,277 runs from 110 matches, at an average of 33.43 and strike rate of 142.47. He scored one hundred and 28 fifties in the shortest format.
From 112 Tests, he has scored 8,786 runs at an average of 44.59 with 26 hundreds and 37 fifties between 2011 and 2024. He also scored 6,932 runs from 161 ODI matches at an average of 45.30 with the help of 22 centuries and 33 half centuries.
“We’ll definitely miss him around the group, out in the field and off field. (An) amazing all-format career. It’s sort of been a slow burn with Test cricket and ODI cricket and now T20. So, life without him, we’ve sort of gotten used to it a little bit … it’s always different when you lose a player that’s been there for so long,” teammate Josh Hazlewood said after Australia’s loss to India.
