Harbhajan Singh says Rohit Sharma’s 2024 T20 World Cup winning team had more match winners than MS Dhoni’s 2007 team | Cricket News
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh says the Rohit Sharma-led India, which won the 2024 T20 World Cup had more “match-winners” in their side in comparison to MS Dhoni’s team that won the inaugural 2007 World T20 in South Africa.
“Overall, if you see the 2024 T20 World Cup winning squad had more match winners than our team (2007 T20 World Cup),” Said Harbhajan Singh on Taruwar Kohli’s podcast “Find a Way with Taruwar Kohli.”
Harbhajan explains the reasons. He said: “Back then it was a very new format for us. We were playing for the first time. We didn’t had much clue about T20 cricket. We went with the flow and kept on winning.”
Harbhajan said that in 2007, they didn’t had that much experienced campaigners barring a few, while in the current side, from top to bottom the side was full with the match winning players.
“In 2007, we didn’t had any big names. Barring Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), Viru (Virender Sehwag), myself and Ajit (Agarkar), most of them were new kids on the block. Dhoni (MS) was captaining for the first time,” he said.
“Now you see the names in 2024, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya… all of them are big match-winners. Then you have Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Axar Patel.
“I feel people don’t talk more about Axar. You see his performance in the final. It was immense. Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah were throughout excellent. All of them are match winners. They played excellent cricket in the tournament.”
Talking about the 2007 World T20, Harbhajan said the most fresh memory he has of that tournament was of Dinesh Karthik’s excellent catch to dismiss South Africa’s Graeme Smith.
“Small small contributions matters the most. I still remember DK (Dinesh Karthik) taking a stunning catch at gully to dismiss Graeme Smith against South Africa. Small contributions leaves a massive impact in you. That catch is still is very fresh in my memory,” he recollected.
