In a horrific mishap on Friday, Mumbai cricketer Musheer Khan met with an accident, ruling him out of action for at least 16 weeks.
The 19-year-old was travelling in a car with his father Naushad Khan and two other members from his Azamgarh home towards Lucknow before their vehicle crashed into a divider and overturned on the Purvanchal Expressway. Musheer was due to represent Mumbai in the Irani Cup game at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow from October 1-5.
Musheer, who is the younger brother of India batter Sarfaraz Khan, has played some noteworthy knocks already in his career. He churned out 360 runs at an average of 60 in the U-19 World Cup held earlier this year in South Africa where India lost in the final. In March 2024, Musheer won the Ranji Trophy with Mumbai. His ton in the final made him the youngest Mumbai batter (19 years 14 days) to score a ton in a Ranji Trophy final, eclipsing the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
In early September, Musheer showed his temperament during his Duleep Trophy debut in Bengaluru. On an overcast morning that also carried a green texture to the M.Chinnaswamy surface, Musheer’s India B side was jolted early wickets. The teenager then bailed his side out of trouble with his solid defence and crisp shot-making on Day 1 against a quality India A attack. Musheer whipped up a century in his maiden Duleep Trophy innings before falling 19 runs short of a double hundred. Musheer’s handling of both spinners and seamers was indicative of his sound technique. While he could only add six more runs in four subsequent innings in the tournament, the youngster’s skill has been appreciated as a sign of things to come.
“My brother (Sarfaraz Khan) and I have the same game. I try to follow whatever he does. In the middle, he only asked me to follow my technique. Usne bola agar tere ko lagta aage bad sakta hai, to aage bad kar khel (If you feel like moving forward, go ahead and do it),” Musheer once said in the past.
“Musheer is an opener. He has got a very calm head on his shoulders. He has got the best of both games. He can change gears as per situation and conditions,” said Naushad once speaking to The Indian Express.
Musheer, who made his First-Class debut in 2022, has compiled over 700 runs in nine FC matches, averaging over 50 while regering three hundreds and a fifty.
