As major overhauls await the league in a fresh cycle starting in 2025, fans will be following their favourite teams rejig structures with the first step of player retentions. First up, here’s a breakdown of the rules:
IPL 2025 Retention major rules
– According to the IPL 2025 Retention rules, a franchise can retain a maximum of six players, either in the retention phase October 31 or through the Right-To-Match (RTM) card during the IPL 2025 mega auction.
– A maximum of five capped and two uncapped players can be part of a team’s six-player retention strategy. The brackets for each retention are marked as – Capped Player 1 (Rs 18 crore), Capped Player 2 (Rs 14 crore), Capped Player 3 (Rs 11 crore) and Capped Player 4 (Rs 18 crore). All uncapped players can be retained at Rs 4 crore. There are no caps on the number of overseas players that can be retained.
– A team can also choose to not retain any of its players and enter the IPL 2025 mega-auction with 6 RTM cards. This will mean the franchise will have a purse of Rs 120 crore when it enters the mega-auction.
