Manchester United on Friday announced Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim as their new manager after sacking Erik Ten Hag earlier in the week.
“Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Head Coach of the men’s first team, subject to work visa requirements,” the club said in a statement.
The former Sporting CP coach will join until June 2027 with a club option of an additional year, once he has fulfilled his obligations to his current club. He will join United on November 11 which means interim manager Ruud van Nelrooy will remain in charge for this weekend’s Chelsea game, the mid-week Europa Laegue fixture vs PAOK and November 10’s Premier League match against Leicester City.

Amorim helped Sporting CP win the Primeira Liga twice, the first of which was the club’s first title in 19 years.
Amorim was courted Manchester City as Pep Guardiola’s potential replacement, linked at one point as Juergen Klopp’s successor at Liverpool and was on the radar of Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern Munich.
His teams play high-intensity football, built a reputation for unearthing hidden gems, has a powerful personality and is known for high tactical knowledge. Only 39, Ruben Amorim has been one of the most sought-after coaches in Europe.
On October 28, Ten Hag left his role as the manager of Manchester United after the latest 1-2 defeat to West Ham United on October 27 continued the club’s worst start in Premier League hory.
United currently stand 14th on the Premier League table and have only won four of their fourteen matches.
