Marco Angulo, a 22-year-old Ecuador international footballer died from injuries sustained following a car crash, the Ecuadorian Football Association said on Tuesday.
The accident has also taken the life of Angulo’s former youth team teammate Roberto Cabezas, the football body added.
Angulo, who was on loan to the Ecuadorian league champion LDU Quito from MLS team FC Cincinnati, was a passenger in the car that crashed into a metal barrier on the Rumiñahui highway southeast of Quito on October 7.

The driver and Cabezas, who played for Independiente Juniors, were killed in the incident.
Angulo was left with serious head injuries and a lung contusion. He was placed in an artificial coma, but died from the injuries on Monday night, the El Universo newspaper reported.
“You will always be in our hearts dear friend,” his club LDU Quito posted on X.
“It is with profound pain and sadness that we bring you the news of the death of our player, Marco Angulo. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts. May he rest in peace,” they added in a statement on Tuesday.
Ecuador’s FA said Angulo “defended the colours of our country at every opportunity he had with his talent and dedication. Marco was not only an outstanding player, but a great teammate. He leaves a deep pain in our hearts.”

Angulo, a defensive midfielder, played for Ecuador’s Under-17s and Under-20s before making his senior debut in a friendly against Iraq in November 2022. He played in another friendly against Australia in March last year.
