Ricky Ponting on overlapping of IND vs AUS 1st Test and IPL auction: It’s the worst possible case scenario for me and J.L. (Langer) | Cricket News
In one part of the world in Perth, the Indian team will take on Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy from November 22 and in the other part of the world auction for the Indian Premier League season 2025 will be held in Jeddah on the 24th and 25th. However, the implications of having both mega events at the same time is the likes of Ricky Ponting (Head coach of Punjab Kings) and Justin Langer (Head Coach of Lucknow Super Giants) who are part of the commentary team for the marquee series have to fly to Saudi Arabia for auction to help out their respective franchises.
“It’s the worst possible case scenario for me and J.L. (Langer),” Ponting said to the masthead. “We for the last couple of months felt that it was probably going to be in the gap between the Test matches. It takes all the pressure off the players from both teams. There are a lot of players in both teams in the auction.”
“So I always thought it would have been in that gap because it just seemed better for everybody. But I don’t know why they’ve chosen the dates they have – it might have something to do with the game. The auction actually starts on air almost immediately after the end of play. So it might be something to do with the broadcast,” Ponting speculated.
In addition to both Ponting and Langer being not part of the commentary box. Australia’s assant coach who is also the Head Coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad will leave for auction. “Dan will complete final preparation for the first Test before attending the IPL auction. He will then be with the team for the remainder of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” Cricket Australia said in a statement.
Earlier The Age has reported that “Vettori is “a trusted lieutenant of national boss Andrew McDonald since joining Australia’s set-up.” Vettori’s deal with CA is different to that of McDonald, who has a full-time contract, as it requires him to be available for a set number of days.”
