Month after two-match ban for on-field tiff, Alzarri Joseph fined ICC for abusing fourth umpire in WI-BAN ODI | Cricket News
A month after his heated argument with ODI captain Shai Hope landed him a two-match suspension from Cricket West Indies (CWI), pacer Alzarri Joseph was on Tuesday pulled up the ICC for another on-field offense.
The 28-year-old pacer was reprimanded for his actions during West Indies’ first ODI against Bangladesh in St. Kitts and Nevis last Sunday. Joseph was found to have violated Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the “use of an audible obscenity.”
According to an ICC statement, the incident leading up to the violation occurred before the start of play when Joseph abused the fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite. “Joseph used offensive and abusive language during an exchange with the fourth umpire. The umpire had asked Joseph to avoid stepping onto the pitch with his spikes on, which prompted the inappropriate language,” the ICC stated.
Joseph received one demerit point, marking his second offence in 24 months. The charge was levied on Joseph on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Asif Yaqoob, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite.
The incident cropped up exactly a month after Joseph was involved in a clash with his captain Hope during Windies’ home ODI series against England, leading to a two-match suspension. Joseph’s heated tiff occurred after he was displeased with a field setting offered to him against English batter Jordan Cox in the fourth over of the innings. He soon finished a wicket-maiden over before storming off the field to the dressing room, leaving West Indies with only 10 men on the field for an over. Joseph then emerged from the dressing room to the dugout and rejoined the side on the field after the end of the following over. He completed his quota of 10 overs with two wickets.
