Imran first met the army headquarters for a meeting on security issues.
Islamabad: New Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan went to the army headquarters in Rawalpindi for the first time, where he was apprised of security issues. Khan, chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), won the general elections on July 25. There is a perception that Pakistani forces, which played a key role in Pakistani politics, gave their full strength to win their party.
In addition to the Prime Minister, Defense Minister Parvez Khattak, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Finance Minister Asad Kumar also went with them to Headquarters. Army spokesman Maj Gen Asif Gafoor said that Army Chief General Kamar Javed Bajwa welcomed Khan at the headquarters. Gafoor said, the Prime Minister was apprised of defense, internal security and other professional issues. On Monday, the first formal meeting between General Bajwa and Prime Minister Khan was held, and both discussed the efforts of ensuring safety and sustainability in the region along with the situation of security in the country.
Bajwa also congratulated Khan for becoming Prime Minister during the meeting. Since the country attained independence in 1947, almost half of the country’s history has been ruled by a powerful army over Pakistan. Khan and Bajwa had met for the first time in 2017 when Khan, a cricketer-turned-politician, congratulated Bajwa for his promotion and appointment as army chief.
