‘Govinda sought his mother’s permission before drinking champagne,’ Sunita Ahuja recalls: ‘He said I’m drinking for the first time’ | Bollywood News

Amid ongoing reports suggesting that divorce proceedings may be underway between Bollywood actor Govinda and his wife, Sunita Ahuja, an interview of Sunita talking about the early years of their relationship has been released. The interview was presumably conducted before speculation about the couple’s divorce started. Here, Sunita recalled going to a fancy hotel with Govinda as he sought permission from his mother to drink alcohol.
In a chat with the YouTube channel Eat Travel Repeat, Sunita reminisced, “When Govinda took me to the Taj (Hotel) for the first time. It was the first time we were going to have champagne together. So we ordered it, but before drinking, Govinda called his mother and asked her, ‘I’m drinking for the first time, what should I do?’ And I was sitting there waiting for him to come back so we could open the bottle. But it’s a good thing. When my son Yash was growing up, I also felt it should be like that.”

The anecdote adds weight to an earlier revelation Govinda in an interview with NDTV years ago, where he emphasised the influential role of his mother, Nirmala Devi, in his life. A classical singer and a spiritual figure, Nirmala Devi’s word was law for the actor. “My mother, Nirmala Devi ji, was a classical singer and also a sage. I took every decision in life based on her instructions. She would just say it, and I would do it.”
In the same interview, Govinda also revealed how his mother was deeply opposed to his foray into the film industry. “Mummy never wanted me to enter the environment of cigarettes, alcohol, or the film world, where such parties and habits are common. She wanted me to be someone who cared for the home and family. She had turned into a saint and wanted me to follow that path. But I took her permission, assuring her that I would never fall into alcohol or cigarettes and that I would always take care of the family.”
While personal recollections like these shed light on the couple’s early bond and Govinda’s deep-rooted respect for his mother, rumours of a separation between the actor and Sunita continue to circulate. However, Govinda’s legal representative, Lalit Bindra, has refuted the speculation. Speaking to NDTV, Bindra stated: “There is no case. Everything is being settled. People are just bringing up old matters.” He added optimically: “This Ganesh Chaturthi, you will see everyone together. You should come home.”
