This is the first spate of protests under the Md Yunus government since the ouster of former Bangladesh Prime Miner Sheikh Hasina. The protests broke out following the death of Sharif Osman Hadi, a key figure of the July Uprising last year and spokesperson of the Inqilab Manch, who succumbed to his injuries after being shot last week.
Protests erupt in Dhaka: Hadi, who was critically wounded in a headshot unidentified attackers, passed away on Thursday night during treatment at Evercare Hospital in Singapore. He was initially operated on at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) due to the serious head injuries. Soon after the news of his death broke, supporters and activs of the July Moncho gathered at Shahbagh in Dhaka, calling for justice over the killing of Inqilab Moncho Convenor Sharif Osman bin Hadi, according to local media reports.Story continues below this ad
In a statement, the Inqilab Mancha urged people to assemble at Shahbagh, saying that if Osman Hadi “responds to the call of his Creator and joins the ranks of martyrs,” the oppressed and freedom-seeking citizens of Bangladesh should come together to safeguard sovereignty.
Students join demonstrations: Several student organisations in Bangladesh also took to the streets across the capital, including protests at the Dhaka University campus. A student group, Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, organised a mourning procession within the campus and marched from Shahbagh to join the larger demonstration at the intersection. During the protest, members of Chhatra Shakti burned an effigy of Home Adviser and retired Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, demanding his immediate resignation over what they described as a failure to arrest those responsible for the attack on Hadi.
