7.1 earthquake hits southern Japan, tsunami advisory issued | World News

1 min readUpdated: Jul 28, 2026 01:34 PM An earthquake regering a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 shook Kumamoto on Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu late Tuesday afternoon. The quake occurred at the depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles) below the sea surface, JMA said.

The Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai (NHK) reported that the earthquake occurred in Kumamoto Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami advisory for the coasts of the Ariake Sea and the Yatsushiro Sea.
