‘A strong woman is not marriage material’: Neena Gupta reveals that 95% of men want women who are helpless | Bollywood News

Neena Gupta has never shied away from speaking her mind, even when her views challenge deeply inherent social norms. Her personal life, particularly her decision to become a mother out of wedlock in the late 1980s, has long been the subject of intense public scrutiny. Decades later, that chapter of her life continues to dominate conversations around her, reflecting society’s enduring discomfort with women who choose to live on their own terms. Staying true to her outspoken nature, Neena recently made a bold observation about marriage and gender dynamics. In a conversation with Humans of Bombay, she shared her belief that strong, independent women are often seen as undesirable in traditional marriages, especially in patriarchal setups.
“A strong woman is not marriage material. Men don’t like strong women, most of them,” she said, adding, “They like helpless women. They hate strong women, or women who have their own thoughts, women who work, who are committed to their own careers. They hate that. They want power over women. I’m speaking in general terms, not about everyone. But it’s true about 95% of our population. I’m not saying this to make a controversial statement, but it’s something I have observed in my own household and in society.”

Earlier in the same conversation, Neena Gupta also opened up about a painful episode from her personal life. She revealed that she was engaged to a man who called off the wedding at the last minute, leaving her devastated. “I was engaged to a guy who ditched me at the last minute. In my mind, I was set to have a child, and the ring ceremony had already happened. I had gone to Delhi to buy my clothes and jewellery, and suddenly I got a call from him saying that we aren’t getting married right now. I asked what happened, and he said he needed to get a sinus operation.”
She added that she never received clarity about what truly went wrong. “To this day, I don’t know the reason behind the wedding being called off. I kept asking his parents what had happened, but they never told me. Then he came back after six months or so and said he wanted to marry me. I said, ‘F**k off. Now, I don’t want to marry you.’”
