Adam Zampa’s 420 jersey number for LA Knight Riders takes MLC storm
There usually is a good reason behind the number a cricketer wears on their back. Chris Gayle’s 333 was a tribute to his highest score in the format. Likewise, Muttiah Muralitharan’s 800 was an ode to his Test wickets. What does 420 mean for Adam Zampa?
That’s been the question for many as the Australian spinner donned the number on his back in the opening week of the first Major League Cricket (MLC) for Los Angeles Knight Riders.
It isn’t the first time Zampa has worn this number. Last year at the International League T20, the Aussie had the same number on his back but there’s been no word from Zampa on the reason behind the same.
In US’s new franchise league’s first week, it induced a number of speculations. One of them was a possible reference to April 20 or 4/20 as it is written in America – referred to as the 420 Day – a holiday celebrated many marijuana consumers in the United States and elsewhere around the world.
That LA Knight Riders played their first MLC game against Texas Super Kings on the opening night compounded further speculations, given the recent hearings in the US state to examine legalizing marijuana for recreational use.
After their first two outings in the MLC 2023, LA Knight Riders lie at the bottom of the six-team points table with back-to-back defeats and will next face San Francisco Unicorns on Tuesday, July 18.
