Far from being a commercial hit

Jaat box office collection day 16: Sunny Deol’s Jaat might be the second highest earner of his career after Gadar 2, but the film is not exactly a commercial hit. On its 16th day in the cinemas, the film made Rs 90 lakh, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. Jaat’s screen count has reduced to 1300 shows with an overall occupancy of just 8.89%. The film, might be earning better than Sikandar, but the Salman Khan starrer had managed to earn Rs 107 crore India nett in 12 days of its release, despite poor reception. Meanwhile, Sunny Deol’s Jaat is still at Rs 81.65 crore in India. As per the makers, the film has earned Rs 110.86 crore worldwide.
Jaat, which released on April 10, remained unharmed with the releases of Akshay Kumar’s Kesari 2 last week and Emraan Hashmi’s Ground Zero on April 25. Despite the arrival of new films, the Sunny Deol starrer managed to keep its momentum. According to early estimates Sacnilk, Akshay Kumar’s Kesari 2 earned Rs 4.15 crore on its 8th day taking its grand total to Rs 50.25 crore, while Jaat’s collection after eight days was Rs 61.65 crore at the domestic box office.
On the other hand, Ground Zero, which released on Friday, opened at just Rs 1 crore. The film, which marked the return of Emraan Hashmi in the lead role after almost four years, had as less as 1700 shows across India. Previously, the actor was seen playing the role of an antagon in Tiger 3 and small role in Sara Ali Khan’s Ae Watan Mere Watan, which released on Prime Video.

After the success of Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal in collaboration with South directors Atlee and Sandeep Vanga Reddy respectively, many actors in Bollywood tried to take up the same formula. However, it didn’t create the same magic at the box office with Varun Dhawan’s Ba John (produced Atlee), Salman Khan’s Sikandar in association with AR Murugadoss, who previously directed Aamir Khan’s Ghajini.
Jaat, directed filmmaker Gopichand Malineni, is reportedly made on a budget of Rs 100 crore. The film also stars actors Randeep Hooda, Saiyami Kher, and south stars Jagapathi Babu and Ramya Krishnan in important roles. With the constant decrease in the number of screens, it looks rather difficult for Jaat to cross Rs 100 crore mark in its domestic collections.
