‘Ageing’ Rohit could quit Tests if Australia tour flops: Srikkanth | Cricket News
Former India skipper Krishnamachari Srikkanth feels Rohit Sharma might call time on his Test career if his Australia outing flops. The Indian management needs to stay prepared for the 37-year-old’s departure and narrow in on a successor, the World Cup winner said.
Sharma, along with Ravindra Jadeja and Virat Kohli, announced his retirement from T20 internationals after lifting the short-format World Cup earlier this year. But since then team India under Rohit’s captaincy has failed to get off with the Test whitewash at home being the latest debacle.
“You have to start thinking ahead. If Rohit Sharma doesn’t do well, I think he will retire from test cricket, for all you know. He’ll play ODIs only. He has already left T20I cricket. We have to keep in mind that he’s also ageing.”
Rohit’s form has come under heavy criticism as well. Rohit, known for his big-hitting abilities, has scored only one half-century in his last 10 appearances. Against the Kiwis, he looked like a shadow of himself. His reckless gameplay is not something one would expect to see from a batsmen who has a prolific Test record like him – 4,270 runs at an average of 42.2.
“Hats off to Rohit for accepting the fact that he played badly throughout the series and captained badly. That’s a great thing. That’s the first move of a player to get back to rhythm. Accepting your faults is very important. That’s a very important quality of a human being. He accepted it openly. That means he’s on the road to recovery, that’s my opinion,” remarked Srikkanth.
