Alec Baldwin’s Rust trailer draws flak for being released despite on-set death of DOP Halyna Hutchins 4 years ago

Mar 27, 2025 11:20 PM People are quite conflicted about Alec Baldwin’s Rust seeing through a release. DOP Halyna Hutchins’ unfortunate death is of course, the trigger The trailer for Rust, starring Alec Baldwin, 66, was recently released and it has, for obvious reasons, opened itself up to a barrage of confused reactions and raised eyebrows. Back in 2021, at the time of filming in New Mexico, Director of Photography for the film, Halyna Hutchins, 42, was on the receiving end of a gunshot, fired from a loaded gun Alec was holding. She didn’t survive the freak accident. The trailer for Alec Baldwin’s Rust is under fire: Halyna Hutchins’ unfortunate on-set death is clearly still raw Cross-wired legal trials later, the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18-months in prison for involuntary manslaughter, in April 2024. The very same judge also dismissed Alec’s involuntary manslaughter charge after ruling prosecutors failed to disclose evidence. Besides the late Halyna, director Joel Souza was also injured on his shoulder during the inexplicable episode. He however, returned to resume filming for Rust, the final cut of which is now a mere few weeks away from release. But the fact that the makers of the film — Alec included, as he is also led as a co-producer — actually chose to go ahead with a full-fledged release, despite the whole furor at the time of Halyna’s death and the ensuing trials, is what is getting everyone’s goat. Comments expressing the same read: “I can’t believe he actually finished making this movie and is releasing it..”, “I guess they can’t use the disclaimer ‘no human or animal was harmed in the making of this film’ “, “Wow!! They actually releasing this movie !?!? Proceeds need to go to the family of the person who was killed”, “They really should’ve just dropped it”, “After all that happened, this movie should have been scrapped” and “Oops typo: Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot Alec Baldwin”. As far as Halyna’s work in Rust goes, she is credited in the trailer alongside cinematographer Bianca Cline who completed her work. The film is eyeing a May 2 theatrical release.
