Amitabh Bachchan doesn’t know why Sooryavansham is one of his most viewed films: ‘We would be making only blockbusters if we knew what works’ | Bollywood News

Amitabh Bachchan has been in the movies since the 1960s and over the many decades, he has seen some low phases in his career. One of those low phases happened in the late 1990s and it was around this time that he appeared in a film called Sooryavansham. Sooryavansham flopped miserably at the box office but became a huge hit on satellite television. The film’s dialogues turned into memes and gifs and continue to be loved his fans.
Talking about this, Bachchan said, “The film was not well received when it was released. But over the years, it has become one of my most viewed films. If we knew the answer to why something works and doesn’t work, we would be making only blockbusters..”

In the same chat, he also spoke about his co-star Soundarya, who tragically passed away in a plane crash in 2004. Recalling the mishap, he said, “She went so suddenly. One day there, the next day… Life! To die so suddenly only reminds us of how unpredictable life can be. She was so young and beautiful. So full of life. Why would she go so suddenly?” He spoke about the time they worked together in Sooryavansham and shared, “I think I had a double role, and she was cast opposite my younger version. Another well known South Indian actor Jaya Sudha was cast with my older character. Soundarya had already done a lot of South Indian films before coming to Hindi cinema. She was well-versed with the camera and its nuances. Very professional. Very promising.”
Film actor Rekha dubbed for both female actors. When asked about this, Bachchan said, “You will have to ask the producers about this. I have no idea.” Sooryavansham, directed EVV Satyanarayana, released in 1999.
