‘Andre Agassi smashed all his trophies after Friends scene shooting’: Brooke Shields
Brooke Shields and Andre Agassi were married briefly before they divorced and all accounts it was a tumultuous relationship. In his 2009 autobiography, Andre Agassi had detailed how the pair estranged and now Brooke Shields zeroes in on one episode just before marriage. At a shooting of the sitcom Friends, where Shields had a guest-starring role in an episode, where he plays the stalker of the character Joe, played Matt LeBlanc.
When the pair started dating, Brooke Shields says how the focus shifted to Agassi. ““Co-opted” gives him too much credit. It was petulant behavior. Well, I guess you’re right. It co-opted it for me emotionally, because all of a sudden then my focus went to him,” she tells the New Yorker. “Well, let’s tell the story of what happened.”
“In the scene, I’m supposed to lick Joey’s fingers, because they’re the hands of a genius, and I want to devour them, and I’m a nut. He was cute—he was, like, “I’ve washed my hands and they’re all clean.” I was, like, “I had a mint!” Agassi was on the shoot that day, sitting with the audience.
“Andre was in the audience supporting me, and he stormed out. He said, “Everybody’s making fun of me. You made a fool of me that behavior.” I’m, like, “It’s comedy! What is the matter with you?” I learned later that he was addicted to crystal meth at that point, so that irrational behavior I’m sure had something to do with that. [In his autobiography, Agassi wrote about using meth in 1997, a year after the “Friends” episode aired.]
And when the interviewer asks Brooke Shields about Agassi’s reaction at home, after the shoot, she says, “Smashed all his trophies. Who wins for that? That’s just—don’t!”
In his book, Agassi had detailed how the relationship with Shields was hit jealousy and drust between the two. He also writes about how Shields used to have a photo of Steffi Graf on the refrigerator. Agassi would later marry Graf.
He also mentions the Friends episode, and in his telling he stormed out after telling her, “The actor playing Joey seems like a nice enough guy. When the scene starts, however, I realize I’m going to have to kick his ass. Apparently the script calls for Brooke to grab Joey’s hand and lick it.
“But she takes it one step further, devouring his hand like an ice cream cone. Brooke is laughing. Joey is laughing. I’m staring, wide-eyed. Brooke didn’t mention anything about hand licking.
“On the next take, Brooke takes Joey’s hand and puts it in her mouth, up to the knuckles. I jump out of my seat, push through a side door. Behind me comes Brooke. She grabs my arm and asks, Where are you going? I don’t want to watch you lick that man’s hand, I say. Don’t do this, Brooke says. Me? Me? I’m not doing anything. Go back and enjoy yourselves. Have some more hand. I’m out of here,” Agassi wrote.
Shields kept a picture of Steffi Graf on the fridge, Agassi wrote, as an example of the “perfect woman with the perfect legs” who would inspire Shields to work out.Agassi also wrote about when he told Shields that he was wearing a fake hair piece to hide his baldness.
“We’re lying on a couch. I sit up, punch a pillow, take a breath.
Andre, what is it?
This isn’t easy to admit, Brooke. But, look, I’ve been losing my hair for quite some time and I wear a hairpiece to cover it up.
I reach out, take her hand, put it on my hairpiece. She smiles. I had a feeling, she says. It’s no big deal. It’s your eyes I find attractive. And your heart. Not your hair.”
Shields convinces him, he writes, to shave his head to his great relief.
