Angelo Mathews dismissal: Moin backs Shakib’s decision, Misbah questions ‘spirit of game,’ Akram recalls Sachin-Shoaib collison in 1999 Kolkata Test | Cricket-world-cup News

Former Pakan captain Moin Khan has backed Shakib AL Hasan’s decision in Angelo Mathews’ dismissal but his co-panel Misbah-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik slammed the Bangladesh captain, while Wasim Akram recalls an incident from the famous Kolkata Test played between India and Pakan.
“You take such decisions on the field. the laws Shakib was within his rights. Shakib has said he took the decision because he wanted his team to win and I think it was a correct decision. I might have done the same,” Moin said on A Sports.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews was given timed out during Sri Lanka’s clash against Bangladesh in Delhi on Monday in a first in international cricket.
However, former Pakan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq disagrees with Moin and questioned Bangaldesh’s “spirit of the game.”

“Where is the common sense? He was ready to take the guard, strap fell out. I would have never appealed at the first place. This is against the true spirit of the game. I can understand if Matthews would have been delaying the proceeding intentionally. Your over rate are slow, match result was affected or you were getting any fine. There was nothing. It was the mattter of 10-15 seconds, it doesn’t matter. Where is the spirit of the game? Cricket was gone,” said Misbah.
The incident happened in the 25th over of the Sri Lanka innings when Shakib Al Hasan had just dismissed Samarawickrama, caught Mahmudullah near the rope.
Mathews took his time walking in, and then struggled with his helmet as the strap broke just as he was taking guard.

As he signalled to the dressing room for a new helmet, Shakib and the Bangladesh team appealed for a “timed out” dismissal and the umpires upheld the appeal much to Mathews’ dismay.
“I would have never appealed. In such situations, umpires stop their watch so they also didn’t had to bring one fielder inside after 40 overs,” said Shoaib Malik.

“It depends upon the situation. Looking at the bigger things, I would not have even thought about it.
“I have been in this situation once. During the famous Kolkata Test in 1999. Sachin was playing well, he played a shot against Shoaib Akhtar towards mid-wicket. Nadeem Khan was the fielder and when Sachin was running back for his third, and Shoaib was backing up and collided. Sachin was not in the crease, it was a freak accident, no body was at fault and he was given out.
“Match referee Cammie Smith indirectly asked me If I would like to take the appeal back and I said, if it is within the laws, Sachin is outside the crease then I am not taking my appeal back. But if you tell me as a referee this is not right take the appeal back I would take it back. He said no this is within the law,” recalled Akram.
