Ashwin reveals creator of CSK’s unique IPL team song

Former India off-spinner R Ashwin is relishing his time back at home with a warm return to the Chennai Super Kings during the IPL 2025 season. In many ways, the Tamil Nadu tweaker has CSK to thank for unearthing and offering him a platform to take his cricketing exploits to the next level. Within a year of making his IPL debut in 2009 under MS Dhoni, Ashwin was out in the India blues representing the country.
Returning to the franchise at Rs 9.75 crore signing at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction in Jeddah last year, Ashwin said the changes within the CSK set-up are negligible when compared to other sides.
Reflecting on his switch from the Rajasthan Royals after a three-year stint and the CSK reunion on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said: “I always tell that ‘change is the only constant’. In several places and teams, I have seen a lot of changes over the years. But when it comes to CSK, nothing has changed. Starting with the backroom staff, the same composure, the team song, etc.,” Ashwin said before delving deeper into the CSK team song’s origin.

“In fact in the team song, I forgot the first few lines this time (chuckles). I tried singing it slow and caught up with the lyrics gradually again,” remarked Ashwin before putting a marker on the creator of the song.
“It is a horic fact that not a lot of people know, but the team song was written George Bailey. He composed the song and we call him an OG of CSK,” Ashwin said in an interaction with analyst Prasanna Lara (aka Pdogg) on YouTube.
In an old clip that has recently gone viral on social media after Ashwin’s revelation, the entire CSK contingent, led Dhoni himself, can be seen singing the team song in high spirits in the dressing room. The video also teases a glimpse of Bailey’s lyrics, coated with a few expletives, on a banner pinned on the glass of the dressing room.
Love you Bailey

Bailey, the current chairman of selectors of the Australia men’s team, represented CSK for two seasons in 2009 and 2010, playing four matches. His CSK career short-lived, Bailey returned to the IPL in 2014 with a switch in allegiance to the Kings XI Punjab. Bailey’s Punjab would then put the boys from Chennai out from the IPL 2014 semi-final before finishing runners-up. Bailey, Ashwin and Dhoni would still form a brief reunion of sorts when they would be teamed up together with the Rising Pune Supergiant in 2016.
