Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was reinstated in parliament today after being convicted in a criminal defamation case for his remarks about ‘the last name Modi’. Mr. Gandhi will return to Lok Sabha, representing his Wayanad constituency, at a time when parliament has repeatedly seen disruptions due to the Indian Bloc opposition demanding in-depth discussions on Manipur following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement on the matter.

On Friday, the Supreme Court, while ordering the adjournment of Rahul Gandhi’s sentence, said that although his remarks were unreasonable, his disqualification for parliament would affect the voters. The high court commented that the trial judge had imposed a maximum sentence of two years in prison for the case, stressing that he would not be disqualified from being an MP if the sentence was less than one day. “The ramifications of disqualification affect not only individual rights, but also voters,” .judge’s said
