‘Bahut purana hai’: Kangana Ranaut drinks water from a silver glass during a podcast, swears Ayurveda | Lifestyle News

Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut recently revealed that she drinks water from a silver glass as part of her Ayurvedic routine. While promoting her film Emergency on a podcast with Shubhankar Mishra, she explained that this practice helps balance her pitta dosha, one of the three primary energies in Ayurveda.
“Bahut purana hai (It’s a very old silver glass),” she said. When asked why she was drinking water from it, she replied, “Moon… sheetalta… jinko pitta zyada hota hai (The moon… coolness… for those who have excess pitta dosha),” she said, emphasising the cooling properties of silver water.
Drinking from silver vessels is an ancient tradition that has been practiced for centuries, especially in royal households. Ayurveda suggests that silver has cooling properties and can help purify water, while modern science acknowledges silver’s antibacterial effects. But does drinking water from silverware actually help balance pitta? And how much of this belief is backed scientific evidence?

Can drinking water from silver vessels genuinely help in balancing pitta dosha, or is this more of a cultural belief than a scientifically proven benefit?
Dr Anjana Kalia, ayurvedic doctor and nutrition at Anjana Kalia ‘s Diet Clinic, tells , “In Ayurveda, silver is believed to have cooling properties that can help in balancing pitta dosha. Pitta represents the fire and water elements in the body, and when it is imbalanced, it can lead to issues like acidity, inflammation, and excessive heat. Silver, being naturally cooling, is thought to help in calming this excess heat. However, while traditional Ayurvedic practices support this belief, there is limited modern scientific research to confirm its direct impact on pitta dosha.”
Does silver-infused water have measurable health benefits?
Silver has long been known for its antibacterial properties, states Dr Kalia, adding that it is believed that “storing water in silver vessels can help kill harmful bacteria and keep the water pure.” This practice was especially useful in ancient times when water purification methods were not advanced. Some studies suggest that silver has antimicrobial effects, she says, which could contribute to cleaner drinking water.
“Compared to copper, which is also commonly used for storing water, silver is milder in its effects. Copper-infused water is known for its ability to kill bacteria and support digestion, but it can sometimes lead to excessive copper intake if used excessively. Silver, on the other hand, does not leach into water as easily as copper, making it a safer choice in moderate use,” notes the expert.
Could excessive use of silver utensils for drinking water have any risks?
While drinking water from silver vessels in moderation is generally considered safe, Dr Kalia asserts, excessive exposure to silver can lead to a condition called argyria. “This happens when too much silver accumulates in the body, causing a bluish-gray discoloration of the skin,” she says.
However, such cases are rare and usually result from consuming high amounts of silver compounds rather than simply drinking water from silver vessels. It is also important to ensure that the silver used for storing water is pure and free from any harmful coatings or impurities. Story continues below this ad
“Some commercially available silver utensils may have mixed metals that could potentially cause health issues. Therefore, using high-quality silver and maintaining proper hygiene is essential,” stresses Dr Kalia.
