Bhopal jail staff to be equipped with stun batons
BHOPAL: Jail guards in Bhopal Central Jail are to be equipped with stun batons, to improve security measures and tackle emergency situations.
Stun batons are handy as they leave the person on whom it is used stunned fort some time. They are already in used in developed countries.
The decision comes after jail administration’s efforts to improve security following the jailbreak by SIMI suspects and the recent shifting of 10 high-profile SIMI operatives to the prison.
“These stun batons give mild electric shock to the person on whom it is used leaving him stunned for nearly two seconds. Thus, it could be very effective in emergency situations,” said an official.
Confirming it, superintendent of central jail, Dinesh Nargawe said, “A proposal for purchasing stun batons has been sent to the jail headquarters.”
To cope up with the security issue, the jail department had already installed 42 CCTV cameras for 41 such inmates—who were kept in high security zone of jail. Apart from it, a dedicated and trained team of 50 personnel has also been constituted to guard these inmates round-the-clock.
These 41 inmates include, 22 alleged SIMI operatives, three suspects of the ISIS-inspired Indian group accused in the train blast in Shajapur, and 15 accused of running an ISI espionage ring in Madhya Pradesh. But after the shifting of 10 SIMI men including Safdar Nagori, there is an increase of in number of high security prisoners to 52.
