Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter on the dearth of romantic Hindi films today: ‘The genre is not taken seriously’ | Bollywood News
Bhumi Pednekar and Ishaan Khatter are set to star in the upcoming Netflix India series The Royals. The show also features Zeenat Aman, Chunky Pandey, and Sakshi Tanwar in prominent roles, with Nora Fatehi and Milind Soman making special appearances. At the trailer launch of The Royals, when SCREEN asked Bhumi and Ishaan about the noticeable decline in romantic films today, the Dum Laga Ke Haisha actor shared that “the genre is just not taken seriously” anymore.
Bhumi Pednekar said, “In the 90s, all the superstars made their careers on the back of romance. Today, the genre is just not taken seriously. It is truly tough convincing people that you are in love with a stranger. I don’t know why people don’t write enough, but I feel there are all these seasons. The season of love is back. In the midst of all the testosterone and everything, The Royals will be a breath of fresh air. I hope this changes the wind and more romance gets written.”

Ishaan Khatter chimed in, “Like they say there are phases. We have seen so much romance and so many love stories have been made that maybe there was nothing new to do and the audience got bored. I feel there has been a significant gap that people started to miss the genre. If you want to see more love stories then give this show the encouragement.”
He added, “This show has a newness which makes the romance exciting. It is a very fresh take on a royal and a commoner. Most people thought this was a period piece when there were early talks about The Royals, but there is going to be a lot more. I want to be a part of more love stories. I only got be a part of one tragic love story in the beginning of my career. It’s been 7 years so it’s been a lot of fun.”
The Royals will release on Netflix on May 9.
