Dr Jyoti Kapoor, founder and director, Manasthali Wellness, said dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects reading, writing, and spelling. “People with dyslexia typically have difficulty recognising and decoding words, which can make reading fluently challenging,” said Dr Kapoor.
Other difficulties include slow reading, poor fluency, challenges with phonemic awareness, sequencing difficulties, and visual or auditory processing challenges, added Dr Sheetal Goyal, consultant neurolog, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central.
“However, individuals with dyslexia often excel in creativity, problem-solving, and innovative thinking. Diagnosis involves assessments psychologs or educational theraps to evaluate reading fluency, comprehension, memory, and phonological skills,” said Dr Goyal.

*Symptoms can include mixing up letters (like confusing “b” and “d”), struggling with reading comprehension, and difficulty in spelling, mentioned Dr Kapoor.

While dyslexia cannot be cured, supportive management includes multisensory teaching methods like Orton-Gillingham, reading aloud or text-to-speech software, and accommodations such as extended test time and audiobooks, said Dr Goyal, adding that many individuals develop coping strategies.

“With support and strategies, many people with dyslexia can still excel academically and in other areas of life,” said Dr Kapoor.
