Boxing Day Test | ‘It was probably one of the best barbecues I’ve seen’: Nathan Lyon on Yashasvi Jaiswal-Virat Kohli run-out | Cricket News
With most of talk happening about the run-out involving Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Virat Kohli during the last 45 minutes of the second day of the Boxing Day Test match in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Melbourne, Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon too had weighed down his thoughts on the run-out. Post Australia’s first inning’s total of 474, India seemed in control at 153 for 2 with Yashasvi Jaiswal batting on 82. With Jaiswal hitting a Scot Boland delivery towards mid-on, Kohli and Jaiswal had a mix up in the middle resulting in Jaiswal getting run out followed India losing two more wickets before the end of the day’s play. Lyon took a dig at the run-out terming it as ‘one of the best barbecues’ he has seen.
“It was probably one of the best barbecues I’ve seen, to be honest with you. It came out of the blue. They were doing it pretty easy out there … Pressure does funny things. Silly run-outs are coach killers, aren’t they? It was pretty special,” Lyon told ABC Radio’s Grandstand at Stumps show after the day’s play.
Earlier in the day, Steve Smith completed his 34th Test century before he was clean bowled Akash Deep in what was a freak dismissal at a score of 140. Smith added 156 runs for the seventh wicket with skipper Pat Cummins (49) and it meant that Australia posted a first innings’ total of 474 runs.

It was Smith’s second hundred in the series after he had scoffed a hundred in the third Test at Brisbane. It also meant that Smith now has the same number of Test hundreds as Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara. Out of a total of 9949 runs, Smith has scored a total of 6209 runs at an average of 61.47 coming at number four for Australia. “He’s the greatest problem solver I’ve ever played with and even witnessed…he’s a special player, and I know when Steve’s up and going. It’s a great feeling to be inside that change room,” Lyon said further.
On Thursday, 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas had made his international debut with a blazing half-century. The youngster, who had earlier become the youngest player to hit a half-century in Big Bash League on debut, smashed Jasprit Bumrah for 18 runs in an over before he ended his innings at 60 runs.
Lyon shared how Konstas shared with him and Pat Cummins about the debut game feeling like a grade game. “Earlier in the practice session before the presentation of Baggy Green, he joined me and Pat Cummins. He said, ‘lads, when do you think the nerves are going to kick-in? This feels like a grade game,” Lyon said.
