Brands start dumping Conor McGregor after a ruling against him in rape case | Sport-others News
Less than a week after a court asked Mixed Martial Arts superstar Conor McGregor to pay $257,000 to a woman who had accused him of raping her, brands have started disassociating themselves from him.
Neither McGregor’s name or image will be used Proximo Spirits which owns Irish whiskey brand Proper No.12 while at the same time IO Interactive ended its collaboration with McGregor, the Guardian reported,
“Going forward, we do not plan to use Mr McGregor’s name and likeness in the marketing of the brand,” the Proximo Spirits told the Irish Independent newspaper.
In a statement on X, IO Interactive posted: “In light of the recent court ruling regarding Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has made the decision to cease its collaboration with the athlete, effective immediately. We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications. Consequently, we will begin removing all content featuring Mr. McGregor from our storefronts starting today.”
A jury decided last Friday that McGregor assaulted a woman at a party in Dublin in 2018. The jury consed of eight women and four men and reached its decision after six hours and 10 minutes of deliberation.
The plaintiff alleged that McGregor sexually assaulted her on December 9, 2018. McGregor has denied the allegation and said he and the woman had “fully consensual sex”.
The plaintiff’s lawyers had accused McGregor of ‘brutally raping and battering’ her after she invited him to join a work Chrmas party.
A spokesperson for McGregor had previously denied the allegations, saying the Irish police had investigated and declined to bring criminal charges.
