After US President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause in the sweeping reciprocal tariffs which came into effect on Wednesday midnight, international reactions have started to pour in amid Trump’s softened stance on tariffs.
The turnaround Trump, which came in under 24 hours after imposing reciprocal tariffs on most of its global trading partners, followed the most intense episode of financial market volatility since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world.
The episode of announcing and then revoking the tariffs temporarily erased trillions of dollars from the stock markets and led to a sudden surge in US government bond yields which caught the attention of the president. “I thought that people were jumping a little bit out of line, they were getting yippy, you know,” Trump told reporters.

Here’s what world leaders have had to say about Trump’s tariff pause:
The incoming German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that a untied European approach to trade had a positive impact and that “Europeans are determined to defend ourselves and this example shows that unity helps most of all.”
Italy’s Economy Miner Giancarlo Giorgetti welcomed the decision made US President Trump to temporarily pause the reciprocal tariffs for 90 days and said the the Group of Seven countries spoke about trying to “calm” the situation.
Bangladesh’s Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus also welcomed the move to halt the tariffs for 90 days which would have resulted in 37% levies on Bangladesh products being exported to the US.
“We will continue to work with your adminration in support of your trade agenda,” Yunus said.

The Vietnamese government has launched trade talks with the United States after Trump announced a 90 day pause on a 46% tariff rate on Vietnam’s exports.
The Vietnamese government said that the US and Vietnam will work to remove as many non-tariff barriers as possible.
A statement was released the government after a meeting between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Miner Ho Duc Phoc and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington.
Taiwan Foreign Miner Lin Chia-lung said the pause in reciprocal tariffs has given breathing space for more in-depth talks, and that the island hopes to take advantage of the “huge” US market for a balanced trade.Story continues below this ad
“Now that we have an additional 90 days, we can discuss Taiwan-U.S. economic and trade cooperation in a more detailed and in-depth manner. We hope to take advantage of the huge U.S. market, their excellent technology capital and talent, to form a Taiwan-U.S. coalition, a joint fleet approach,” miner Lin said, according to Reuters.
