A man suspected of carrying out a shooting at Brown University that killed two students and injured nine others was found dead inside a storage facility, authorities said.
Police said the suspect died suicide on Thursday night. The Associated Press (AP) reported that the body was found at a storage site on Thursday evening, citing a law enforcement source. The suspect is also believed to be linked to the killing of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor at his home near Boston, the source said.
“He took his own life tonight,” Oscar Perez, chief of the Providence, Rhode Island police department, told a press conference.
Perez identified the suspect as Claudio Nevis Valenti, a 48-year-old Brown University student.
The discovery came hours after a large police presence was seen at a storage facility in Salem, New Hampshire. Journals reported that officers wearing tactical gear entered the site shortly before 8 pm.Story continues below this ad
The search for the shooter had intensified earlier this week after state officials said a person of interest detained on Sunday had been released. Providence mayor Brett Smiley said the decision was “likely to cause fresh anxiety for our community”.
